Wonga

One of the top Polish payday lenders, on the KNF Register of Lending Institutions. Wonga has been active in Poland since 2013, part of the British Wonga group (one of Europe's first online payday firms). A Vivus competitor in the „first free" segment, with a similar model and slightly different marketing.

Active since: 2013 · Non-bank lender (KNF register)

Character of the lender

Wonga entered Poland as a Vivus alternative — first loan up to 3 000 PLN over 30 days at 0% RRSO. Terms on later loans are close to the competitor. Wonga's tell: a stricter policy on repeat loans — the firm declines an application if the previous loan was even a few days late, where Vivus is more lenient.

The Wonga mobile app (launched 2020) is one of the better ones in the non-bank segment — full end-to-end process, loan history, early repayment in one tap. Payments accepted via Blik, express transfer, card.

After the 2022 amendment Wonga cut its portfolio by about 30%. The firm is deliberately backing away from the riskiest segment; the BIK score needed for the first loan rose from 300 to 340.

Fits well for

  • Emergency up to 3 000 PLN repayable from the next payslip
  • Clients who value a good mobile app even in the payday segment
  • Anyone who wants to avoid the roll-over trap — Wonga is selective here

Not for

  • Clients with a payment record of delays — Wonga usually declines
  • Anyone hunting rollover flexibility — Wonga rarely agrees
  • Anyone chasing the cheapest second-loan cost — close to Vivus
